My, how time flies when you’re havin’ fun.
I can’t believe it’s been a year since we got to meet Serafina face to face. She is such a blessing and truly a gift from God. It has been an honor to parent alongside Ben and I look forward to the many years to come as we continue to strengthen our marriage bond as well as our parenting teamwork.
The following is a letter to my sweet baby girl in honor of her first birthday…

My dearest Serafina,
When we found out we were pregnant with you, Mommy and Daddy couldn’t believe it. God asked us to trust Him to have you so we did and He answered. As you grew inside me, it was so fun talking to you, feeling you move, and imagining what you would be like when we finally got to meet you. You broke out of the womb in a flash and you haven’t stopped since.
You have such a vibrant personality, which goes with your name’s meaning of “fiery one.” You also love to read and sing, which goes with your first middle name which means “little poet.” And we knew you’d love playing with your Nana Anne and Grandma Marilyn, which is why we gave you a second middle name made up of theirs.
Lots of people who love you and love Mommy and Daddy got together a few weeks ago and had a party to dedicate you to the Lord’s care. Daddy said a lot of really great things about how much we love you and how proud we already are of you, even though you’re only one year old. He also shared our prayer for you, something that each of your Zupke aunties and your Daddy has. But yours is special just for you and we pray it over you every night before you go to sleep. Someday you’ll help us pray a special prayer over a brother or sister and you’ll start to understand how important it is to pray to our Heavenly Father.
We commemorated your birthday this morning with something we did the morning you were born: walked to the donut shop to get a maple bar. I’ll let you have one next year on your birthday…today’s donuts are still just for Mommy and Daddy. 🙂 At your dedication party, you got to eat an entire piece of blackberry pie, something we’ll do every year for your birthday. You seemed to like it at this first one so I’m guessing it’s a favorite already. You got lots of books for your birthday and even a stuffed animal that looks like Maya-dog. We love watching you crawl around and how happy you are.
You are my Cutie Cute-ster, Sweet Serafina, Kiddo Friend, Missy Moo, and even Stinker-fina and Serafina Grumpypants when you want to be. I love how you keep me on my toes and never let me get bored. It is also fitting, and scarily foreshadowing, that your first real word has been, “Uh oh.” And you know when to say it. Oh well…Mommy’s got one just like her I guess!
Happy 1st Birthday, Love Bug. We love you so much!
P.S. You’re definitely my daughter…we both smile so big that our eyes scrunch. And you’re definitely Daddy’s…his left eye scrunches more than his right, too. Love you, Scrunchface!
